Ancient civilizations have had profound effects of what we know as the modern world today. The primary purpose for anything that lives is to survive. Throughout history animals, plants and humans have adapted to their surroundings. All living things have changed throughout time. The thing that differs humans from the rest is, humans are more cognitively advanced. Over the course of time the shape and size of the human skull have changed. The size of the human brain has increased, which has allowed humans to adapt more to their surroundings. To survive, humans were making tools for hunting and to cut with. The closer you lived to the equator the darker your skin may have been, so you could adapt to the intensity of the sun’s rays. Despite their efforts to survive, modern humans derived from Homo sapiens approximately 200,000 to 100,000 years ago, (Hunter, Corbishley, 14). So many p eople have asked what makes someone human? There are so many things that may factor into this equation, such as language, or the ability to feel compassion and love. Neanderthals are reported to have had ceremonies for those who died, but to them it was only a part of their journey (Wilkinson 38). The period for hunters and gathers was coming to an end as Homo sapiens began to settle in different parts around the world. This set the stage for the birth of agriculture. The modern world today relies heavily on those who farm our produce and meat. However, it was our prehistoric ancestors who paved the way, allowing hunters and gatherers to stay in one place. Another factor was warmer climates made it possible to plant grains. Eventually herding animals such as goats, pigs, cattle and sheep would come into play (Hunter, Corbishley 20). Animals would provide many resources, wool and leather could be used for clothing. The bones could be used for making tools and the meat was a great sou rce of food. Humans during the Neolithic Age, people began building small structures made out of bones and animal hide to protect them from the harsh elements of the weather (Hunter, Corbishley 16). School Shootings Essay Running head: SCHOOL SHOOTINGS: AMERICAS TRAGEDYSchool Shootings: A Tragedy in AmericaSchool Shootings: A Tragedy in America The school shootings at Westside Middle School were orchestrated by two juveniles. On Monday, March 30, 1998 two boys ambushed students and teachers outside Westside Middle School in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Andrew Golden a youth of 11 years and Mitchell Johnson who was 13 years old were responsible for this hideous tragedy. Apparently, Mitchell Johnson hid in the woods while Andrew set off the fire alarm causing the students and teachers to run out of the building. Armed with three stolen rifles and four handguns, the documentary explained that the two youth flushed kids and teachers out of the school by means of a false fire alarm then opened up on them. When they stopped shooting, four students and a teacher lay dead and 10 students were wounded. It seems to go hand in hand that while people are being convinced that school murders are occurring more frequently, various types of school violence also seem to be rising. This is once again a myth. The United States Departments of Education and Justice distributed a survey to students both in 1989 and 1995. It was reported that the students only felt a . 1% increase in the total level of victimization (Kappeler, 188). As a matter of fact, only one in ten public schools report any sort of violence at all (Kappeler, 189). The reasons behind the rare violent outbursts of children remain some sort of a mystery. As we saw in Kip Kenkels story, it is easy for kids today to get wrapped up in violent popular culture. Today, extremely violent movie scenes and music lyrics about murder and violence plague children. People like to try and rationalize the kids motives and in doing so, they also like to believe that there are ways to help prevent these heinous crimes. Christi Parsons recommends that children become more involved in positive extra-curricular activities (Struckhoff, 50). Many argue that the best and simplest way to prevent acts of violence is to have a strong parent/child relationship. Discipline begins in the home. As for violence with firearms, the most obvious preventative measure would be to have stricter control over firearm and handgun access (Struckhoff, 54). There is no reason that children should have any access to handguns. Unfortunately, there are those few exceptions, like Kips story, when the childs parents actually provide the guns. There are also programs that can be provided by the schools to inform children about violence and safety. Many of these types of programs are listed on the OJJDP website, such as: violence prevention programs with parent or community involvement, counseling, activities involving individual attention for students, and student involvement in resolving student conduct problems (Internet Site #5).School violence is not nearly as large an issue as the media has made it out to be. While reading this story I thought a lot about the family issues they face, the working field for people with these daily challenges, and also just the fact of them being accepted in the world as a normal human being. These things really touched my heart not realizing the things they go through that so many people take advantage of on a daily basis. I found it very interesting the two different lifestyles that the two men lived with during their lives after. I think it is a good thing and a bad thing in a different manner to how his mom treated him. I believe that you can show someone with a disability to much sympathy. A lot of people don’t want you to feel sorry for them and want to be accepted and looked at as if they were just as capable as we are. So many people try to treat them as if they are babies and not able to do anything which in return will make them not want to be around you. I feel like we should let them do as much as they are possibly able to do so they will feel accepted and feel as if there is nothing different about them. Also, letting them do things and be self dependent will not cause them to be lazy and depend on others for things that they are capable of doing. I feel like that reason is one reason you see many people with disabilities over weight because the family waits on them hand and foot. On the other hand you have these families that only want the people around for the money that they receive on them and don’t take care of them at all and especially with the things that they have to have done because it is impossible for them to do them alone. These people suffer daily because of the neglect they receive on families and friends that are just not doing the part that they have accepted and supposed to be doing. I feel like if a family takes on the role of being the primary aregiver to their loved one then they should have classes and whatever it takes to be the perfect caregiver for them. There is a lot of time and patience you have to put into them if you really are in it for the love. The working field in my opinion is one of the biggest struggles with people with these disabilities. I say if they are able to work let them do it. If they want to get out in the real world and make money to support them and not live off the government then let them do it. I think it is a blessing when you see them out working just as hard if not harder than the people that don’t have challenges as they do. There are a lot of jobs out there where I know these people could fit in and do a wonderful job. For example, I live in Grant County Kentucky and there is a gentleman that works for the court system and has a well seen disability. It takes him longer to get where he is going and his speech isn’t as good as what mine is but he does it daily. It touches my heart every time I see him working and doing for himself and not being dependent on anyone else. I am sure there are times that he has to ask for assistant but for the most part his is totally dependent. The other thing that I have seen that is awesome in the work field for people with the same disabilities as Steve and Jim is at Goodwill Store they are all about people with disabilities. I worked for the company before and they welcome them there to work with open arms and treat them no different. I think that people with disabilities are often looked at as if they are monsters of some sort. The society today is a hard place to live in. Steve and Jim were treated as if they were outcast from different people and treated like there was no other and there was nothing wrong with them just because they had something wrong with them. You have to show these people love and affection and let them be known that they are here for a reason and they are needed out in this world. Just because they have a mental or physical disability doesn’t meant that they don’t have a heart. I feel like Jim’s girlfriend couldn’t have done anything worse than getting with his best friend after his times of need. Yes, he was hard on her and others when all they were doing was trying to help out but you have to think as if you were in his shoes. It is a very trying and emotional time for someone to have such trauma hit them at such a young age. The things you could do with your friends and family is now just an existence. I think if she really loved him then she would have bit her tongue for awhile and gave it time to let it all sink in. Maybe take him to some kind of counseling like he got afterwards to make him feel better about the situation that he was put in out of his control. I know if that was my boyfriend I would have stuck with him until the end and wouldn’t have let anyone or anything come before that commitment. I really enjoyed reading this story and it has definitely made me look at people with such a less fortunate life then we have different. It made me realize that when I have something bad going on in my life that there is always someone else who is having a bigger problem so just hold your head high and thank god that I am alive and breathing and need no assistance. I am so glad that both of these gentlemen’s life is going so well for them today and they are achieving everything that their heart has set out to do. If people today would see that there is a special place for disabled people as special and determined as Jim and Steve were this world would be a better place.
